Basketball has grown in popularity in York Region, especially in the city of Vaughan. There are REP basketball teams in Richmond Hill, Thornhill, and Maple. What is the difference? How can you choose the best REP team for your child?
Start by making a phone call and speaking with the representative of the REP Basketball club. Ask them the following questions.
In the U10-U12 ages OBA requires each team to start with 10 players. Teams who cannot field 10 players loss by default, but the game is still played. Players in this age group are also required to play equal playing shifts of four minutes each. The maximum number of players that the OBA allows is 15 per team. Typically, the most competitive teams take a maximum of 11 players. Having a smaller roster gives players on the team more playing time. Team with smaller rosters tend to be more competitive because their more developed players can play longer in games. In addition, when there are 15 players at a game, two players will only play two shifts, the rest of the players get three. When there are 12 players at the game, each player will have four shifts. Maple Basketball will only take a maximum of 12 players per team. Players work hard at practice and families travel long distances to attend games. When game day arrives, we want out athletes playing the maximum amount of shifts. We feel that only playing two shifts (eight minutes) is not fair to the player or family. Therefore, the maximum number of players Maple Basketball Teams would take is 12. If we took less players, it may be difficult to have 10 players attend each game. Twelve players give our basketball team the ability to have two players absent, yet still have enough players to compete. On the first day of Maple Basketball practices. Players will be evaluated on 50 technical basketball points – from shooting to defensive skills. Player evaluations will serve as the focal point for player development. It will allow the coaching staff, player, and parents to track the player’s progress. Our system and basketball curriculum combined with players analytical data, puts Maple Basketball on the cutting edge of player development. Maple Basketball has very specific offensive and defensive strategy. Their strategies were developed by leaders in youth basketball and adopted by Maple Basketball. Our program is cutting edge and has proven successful with our REP teams. We also have a defensive strategy and philosophy. Maple Basketball philosophy is that "Success in Basketball, is Success in Life". We believe that the lessons learnt on the basketball court stay with our players, and will be applied to other aspects in their life. A player who works hard, practices, overcomes countless obstacles to succeed in basketball - can later use the same skills to succeed in university, a career, and his/her personal life. These are the reasons we take basketball so serious. It's more than a game to us. Maple Basketball's system ensures complete player development. Player progress is tracked with quarterly evaluations. Our curriculum is broken down into 10 layers. Each layer builds on the previous layer, creating a continuity in learning.
